It's Time for Giving

Holiday season is officially here, which means the season for giving is officially here too! With all sorts of year-end celebrations, holiday parties and gift exchanges, it is easy to get caught up in all the  cheer. But as we celebrate with friends, family and colleagues, it is also important to remember those less fortunate, who may be struggling this time of year.

This festive season can become that much more rewarding through donations or charitable giving. Knowing you have helped someone else create a joyful holiday season for them and their family can be more gratifying than any gift or present received. This is why GROM Audio takes part in giving back to our community every holiday season.

Through donations to local shelters, food banks and other holiday charities, you and your loved ones can also help someone who may be homeless or not have enough money to buy gifts for their children. Even the smallest contribution could impact someone's life, transforming the holiday season from stressful to joyous. So this holiday season, help GROM Audio spread the meaning of Christmas through by reaching out to your local charities!

Happy holidays to all, GROM Audio wishes you a joyful holiday and a wonderful New Year!

The GROM-BT3 Helps Drivers in the US and the UK

Recently GROM Audio's Bluetooth adapter, the GROM-BT3, was featured in one of the UK's premier car magazines, Vehicle Electronics Professional. The UK-based magazine highlighted the benefits of hands-free calling as well as the seamless integration and installation processes of this adapter. Discussing our affordable solutions to modernizing your standard car stereo, VEP magazine showcased how GROM Audio's products can transform your driving experience.

While there may be some distinct differences in driving in the US verses the UK, ie. passing on the right and of course driving on different sides of the road, GROM Audio can still help revamp your outdated car stereo system with ease. Regardless of where you drive your wheels, GROM's car audio interfaces can not only provide entertainment, but can also ensure safe driving through hands-free options and steering wheel button controls. Although the GROM-BT3's main functionality is to allow for Bluetooth wireless connection, this car audio adapter also has two external extension ports for AUX-IN and iPhone/iPod/iPad connection. Therefore, drivers can utilize the convenience of hands-free calling while also having their personal music device connected!

GROM Audio Explains Music File Formats

GROM Audio's car audio adapters support a variety of music file formats, allowing you to enjoy most types of audio while driving. Although most people have come accustom to MP3 files, there are an assortment of other file formats which generate higher quality sound or have less software restrictions.

While MP3 files are reduced in size in order to allow more space in your music library, these files also lose some sound quality through their compression process. Other GROM supported audio files such as AAC formats follow the same lossy compression process, meaning data is removed through downsizing of the file, typically this data loss is unnoticeable to the ear.

But GROM Audio's adapter also allow drivers to appreciate lossless audio files such as FLAC formats. FLAC files, meaning Free Lossless Audio Codec, retain more information to create an audible boost in sound quality. The sound of FLAC files are closer to WAV formats, which are uncompressed files that are also supported by GROM products, including the GROM-MST3, GROM-AND2 and GROM-USB2P. Uncompressed files produce the best sound, but these files can be very large, taking up a considerable amount of space on your MP3 player, mobile device or computer.

So now when you are determining what audio files to download, you can understand the effects that impact the sound coming through you car audio speakers. Through a plethora of adaptable audio files, GROM allows you to listen to the exact sound quality you are looking for while driving.

How to Locate BMW CD Changer Connector in a BMW Trunk

While GROM Audio takes pride in providing its customers with easy-to-use car audio adapters, we understand that installation of these interfaces can be confusing to novice users. For drivers with BMW vehicles, equipped with navigation or DSP, installation of their GROM device is slightly different than other vehicles because they must install their adapter in the trunk, where the CD changer is located.

If the CD changer was not previously installed, locating the connector is tricky, as it is well hidden behind a fabric cover in the trunk.

So today we will give BMW drivers a step-by-step tutorial on locating the correct trunk mounting cable to allow Android and USB integration, as well as iPhone connectivity and/or Bluetooth
capabilities—depending on the car kit purchased.

In order to connect GROM interfaces such as a BMW iPhone adapter, you must first locate the 3-pin connector for the CD changer.  Please watch the Youtube video that explains where the connector is located. Please note, in BMWs with cell phone connection, there are two 3-pin connectors that look almost identical. To ensure you disconnect the correct 3-pin connector associated with the CD changer, please watch the tutorial video below:

Once you have located the cable with the brown ground wire in position #1, drivers can easily disconnect the CD changer and attach the matching cables to connect their GROM device. These steps are the same regardless of whether you have purchased a Bluetooth car kit for BMW or you are installing an adapter for BMW Android and USB integration.

Despite the features you are looking for or the device you are looking to connect, GROM Audio can help you create an on-the-go media center in your BMW!

How does the USB streaming work for Android devices with Jelly Bean software?

While Android users eagerly await the release of Google's next operating system update, KitKat 4.4, they can rest assured that the current OS, Jelly Bean 4.3, is working with flawless functionality. After the announcement that the current 4.3 version is now compatible with older phone models, GROM Audio wanted to ensure drivers could utilize their Android device for USB audio streaming.

To guarantee the best sound quality possible, GROM Audio's technical support suggests to use the USB cables provided with your car audio adapter kit. Drivers have two choices–use the GROM kit with the AALinQ media player to be able to control media playback from the car stereo or steering wheel buttons, or use USB audio streaming with every music app.

Today we will describe how drivers can enable the USB audio steaming to utilize the media apps on their mobile devices. Before starting, Android users must make sure the operating system on their device is at least 4.1 or higher. (Please note, most but not all phones with 4.1+, support USB streaming, due to some providers do not support this feature)

In order to receive high-quality sound through USB streaming, drivers must enable this feature on the GROM USB Android kit using a configuration  file—please see the GROM forum for instructions on config files. Once the file is loaded, drivers can listen to media through any app stored on their Android phone or tablet. Applications such as Pandora, Spotify, Youtube and even navigation apps, will then be redirected through the GROM audio adapter, creating clean sound quality for daily driving.

Although USB streaming functionality allows drivers to use more media applications on their device, these applications do not allow track control and song information (ie, title, artist, length, etc) will not be displayed. If used with GROM's AALinQ application through USB streaming, AALinQ will act as the regular media player, and the car stereo and steering wheel buttons with not function.

To receive the full functionality of the AALinQ app, to control tracks and see song information displayed on your stereo, drivers must reset their GROM audio interface or load another config file to turn it back on, which would be the config file with gromusb2.cfg with a=1 instead.

To reset the GROM module, you can simply disconnect it from the vehicle specific harness, and reconnect it back.

Note: Known limitations of USB audio streaming include, HTC phones and some Samsung and Nexus Android phones

Please see the demo video for USB audio streaming below:

Review on GROM-USB2P-BMWT installed into BMW X5 with DSP

We at GROM are always looking to receive the feedback from our customers. This helps us to stay on track, improve and make sure that we are doing the right things. Some of the reviews can also be a great help for the other people who are interested in installing GROM. Here is the one from Amazon customer with BMW X5 (original wording and punctuation are preserved):

"Brought the Grom USB / Ipod and Bluetooth for my 2001 X5 BMW. I have the DSP non Nav radio so to upgrade the system is pretty hard. Had the 6 CD changer in the rear, and sometime it will need to be reset in order for it to work, in other word I had to eject the cartridge and then reinsert the cartridge. My X is too old for the later Bluetooth and the car phone that was available when the X was brand new was analog.

Because I had DSP I had to buy the DSP adapter so that I could have a 6-pins connector for the GROM harness. The install of the DSP adapter was fairly easy. Instead of tapping into the car harness for the DSP adapter power, I tapped into the Grom 3 pins connector that connects to the BMW harness. The center wire in the Grom 3-pins adapter is the power wire and I used a ring for the negative connection to the car body. Connected the harness to the Grom adapter, connected the 3-pins Grom connector to the BMW 3-pins connector, connected the 6-pins Grom connector to the 6-pins connector at the DSP adapter and connected the coaxial cable from the DSP adapter to the BMW Amp.

I'm using a 16GB flash drive that is about the size of a nickle to store my music. I made 6 folders and number them 1-6. Gave the wife 1 folder and the kids 1 folder and I kept the other four folders. The 6 folders matches the 6 cd button on the radio.

Supposedly with a 16GB flash drive I can load close to 3000 MP3 song files. Went to the computer and started dragging my songs into the folders. Ejected my flash drive and inserted in the Grom and started the BMW to listen to the music. The music is as good as any CD that I ripped. The steering wheel button changed tracks and controlled the volume. No more burning CDs. Kool

Next I connected the Bluetooth dongle and paired my cellphone. Called my brother and asked him to call me back. While listen to the Grom, the music was muted as my call came through the car audio system. Kool Next weekend will be to route the microphone cable from the overhead console back to the Grom.

Finally connected the Ipod cable and,my Ipod to the Grom. Selected Ipod and the next thing I knew the Grom was playing music from my Ipod. I could use the click wheel to select songs or start a playlist and use the radio control or steering wheel control to go back and forth on the playlist. The Ipod cable also charged my Ipod. Kool again.

So if you want something better than the CD changer and you want Bluetooth capability in your X install a Grom, you won't be disappointed."

2.) Switch to the GROM mode (CD, AUX, Disc or XM button - depending on the car stereo)
3.) For GROM-USB2P or GROM-MST3 switch to the AUX mode (according to the manual). For GROM-BT3, GROM-AUX3 or GROM-AND2 there is no need to switch the mode, once the music device is turned on, it will start playing through the car stereo speakers.

Use Your USB Device to Listen to Music in the Car

Many European cars come equipped with a USB output, making it easy for drivers to listen to media stored on a mass storage device. This is why it is common practice for European drivers to use USB devices, rather than a MP3 players or mobile phones, to listen to music while driving. Since USB devices often have much more space to store music and media, users can free up space on their mobile phones to allow applications to load faster and phone battery to last longer.

But many car makes, both American and European, do not come standard with the use of USB. Therefore, drivers must adapt their vehicles in order to use the luxury of using a mass storage device to play media. GROM Audio designs and manufactures USB adapters with add-ons to cater to drivers audio needs. Car audio adapters such as the GROM-USB2P give drivers not only the ability to listen to music on a flash drive, but also direct connection Android devices and the capability to add Bluetooth, aux input, and iPod/iPhone connectivity (all sold separately).

Customize a Car Audio Adapter - Fit to Your Needs

Many cars, new and old, do not come equipped with the technology to connect your MP3 player, mobile phone or tablet to your car stereo. Therefore, in order to enjoy your own music library, stream music or listen to podcasts, drivers must buy products such as adapters, auxiliary cables,  USB cords, FM transmitters or even  new stereos in same cases. Not only are there many products on the market to adapt your music player into an in-car theater, but there are also many different types of music players—making it hard to find the best equipment for your needs.

GROM Audio creates customizable car kits for over 30 car makes and models, perfect for a multitude of car audio needs—giving both Android and iOS users many different options to satisfy their in-car listening issues. GROM designs, develops and manufactures car audio adapters, which have add-ons such as Bluetooth dongles, auxiliary capabilities and USB connection. These adapters and add-on products allow drivers to create an audio adapter tailored to their exact needs, whether they are looking for an Android audio adapter or iPod (iPhone) car adapter.

With the ability to create exactly what you want, drivers can avoid extra unnecessary equipment while enjoying features like Bluetooth wireless connectivity for hands-free driving, wireless music listening and GPS turn-by-turn navigation (via Bluetooth adapter or Dongle add-on). Through USB, AUX, iPod, Android and Bluetooth integration GROM gives users personalized after-market car stereo adapters transforming their in-car listening experience.

GROM Adds Direct Android Connection for High-Quality Sound and Listening

Most Apple users have come accustom to countless products to adapt to their iPhones, iPads, or iPods. Companies, including GROM Audio, create iPod car adapters, auxiliary cables and/or Bluetooth devices allowing drivers the ability to listen to music in the car, make calls hands-free, connect to GPS and much
more.

But what about Android users?

GROM Audio is the only car audio company to meet the growing demand for Android-compatible equipment to connect Google devices to your vehicle. The more people switch to the Android operating system, the more they will find that there is a clear lack of Android adapters to connect their devices to their vehicles. This is why GROM Audio has spent the last year on Android development, creating car audio adapters, which give Android users the same capabilities as as Apple users.

Through adapters such as the GROM-AND2, Android users have the ability to directly connect their phone or tablet to their vehicle. Then they have the same luxuries Apple users have, including the ability to connect wirelessly through Bluetooth, stream music through apps or listen to their own music library. These Android audio adapters also give drivers GPS capabilities and hands-free calling through Bluetooth, making being on-the-go so much easier!

GROM Audio Aux Adapters for Cars Create Hands-free Calling for Users

The Best Aux and Bluetooth Adapter for your Car

It is important for drivers to feel safe on the road and one of the easiest ways to do so is through hands-free calling. Bluetooth capabilities not only create the safety drivers are looking for, but also give them the ability to stream or enjoy their own music library wirelessly. Unfortunately, not all cars come equipped with Bluetooth capacities, which is why GROM Audio creates aux adapters for cars without these features.

Since drivers are looking for aux Bluetooth solutions for their vehicles, GROM Audio developed the GROM-BT3. These Bluetooth and auxiliary adapters are simple and affordable solutions for many car makes and models, giving drivers in-car Bluetooth hands-free calling and 3.5mm input for MP3 player and smartphone connection. The BT3 adapters give drivers an aux cable for their cars, allowing features that make the driving experience safer and more enjoyable.
